La Nina ends but 'wetter than usual weather’ expected over coming months

A significant weather system appears to be heading towards the Gold Coast.

A Bureau of Meteorology radar image as of 2.40pm Tuesday showed a large band of rain moving across southeast Queensland.

The system appeared to be moving south.

The Bulletin has contacted BOM for a weather update.

On Sunday, BOM forecasted a trough would bring rain to the Gold Coast on Tuesday, clearing on Wednesday.

Gold Coast weather: Sunny days forecast as students go back to school - July 10

After a wet start to the winter school holidays, the Bureau of Meteorology has forecast sunny days and cold nights through until next Monday.

BOM senior meteorologist Kimba Wong said minimum temperatures on the Coast should drop to single digits during the night.

But the mercury will rise to tops of high teens and low 20s in the coming days, with plenty of sunshine.

Tuesday is the only day to expect a few millimetres of rain in the gauges due to a trough, but Ms Wong said this should clear by Wednesday.

“Some people will wish they were on school holidays this week because the weather doesn’t look bad,” she said.

The forecast will be welcome news for holiday-makers from South Australia and Tasmania – with their winter school holidays just starting.

Students from NSW, the ACT, Northern Territory and Western Australia will head back to the classroom from next Monday.

Wet weekend: Coast to cop intense drenching for six days

June 30: Rain is set to fall on the Glitter Strip for six days straight until next Wednesday.

BOM Meteorologist Helen Reid said the wet weather was predicted to peak over the weekend but could remain heavy into early next week.

“Depending on how that system evolves early next week, you could be looking at quite a few more wet days,” Ms Reid said.

“The daytime temperature will feel quite cool as the cloud cover won’t be letting the sunshine in.”

The downpour comes despite BOM officially declaring the end of the La Nina weather pattern that has brought record rain and floods to the country for months.

Ms Reid said the an upper trough currently sitting over Central Australia had caused the burst of rain.

“La Nina is only one of the things we need to consider,” she said.

“There are other factors that come into play when we look at individual weather events and how they add up to a season.”

The rain will be an unwelcome surprise for thousands of southern tourists who have flocked to the Glitter Strip for the winter school holidays.
