COMMONWEALTH Games Minister Kate Jones says Labor will outspend the LNP almost five times on attracting tourists to the Gold Coast.

“Tim Nicholls’s $10 million promise is a slap in the face. Our commitment to attracting flights to Queensland is worth more nearly five times that,” Ms Jones said.

The Opposition today announced that as part of their tourism policy the Coast would get a $4 million Fun in the Sun campaign.

After speaking at a TSS breakfast, Ms Jones told the Bulletin: “Tourism is the lifeblood of the Gold Coast economy and that’s why our promise to invest $134 million in Queensland tourism is such an important announcement for the Glitter Strip.

“A re-elected Palaszczuk Government would invest $48 million on attracting international flights and strengthening the links between our domestic airports to make sure tourism businesses in cities like the Gold Coast continue to prosper.

“Ten million dollars wouldn’t scratch the sides — Tim Nicholls’s announcement today shows a lack of knowledge of the industry and a lack of commitment to supporting Gold Coast businesses.

The LNP today has announced a major tourism campaign for the Gold Coast after the Commonwealth Games.

The Opposition’s State election campaign is also to focus on education with Gaven MP Sid Cramp this morning to announce an upgrade in learning services at a northern Coast school.

Labor’s campaign on the Coast today began with Commonwealth Games Minister Kate Jones speaking to parents at a TSS breakfast at the Royal Pines Resort.

Opposition Commonwealth Games spokesman John-Paul Langbroek made the announcement on the LNP’s tourism policy at a media conference at 10.45am.

Mr Langbroek promised the LNP in government would boost tourism on the Glitter Strip with a $4 million Fun in the Sun campaign.

Opposition tourism spokesman Jon Krause said revitalising the Coast tourism industry and

unlocking its potential was a crucial part of the LNP’s plan to Build a Better Queensland.

“We understand that tourism investment and attracting more domestic and international tourists will create jobs and help families get ahead,” he said.

“Queensland should be Australia’s number one tourist destination but Labor’s failure to support our tourism sector means we have lost significant ground to other states and territories.

“The Gold Coast has so much to offer, from the theme parks at Helensvale, the night-life in Surfers Paradise, the wildlife at Currumbin to the long sandy beaches, there is something for everyone to enjoy.”

The LNP strategy is to focus on different demographics to show them “the hidden gems of the Gold Coast”.

Meanwhile, Mr Cramp this morning was joined by Opposition education spokesman Tracy Davis at the Pacific Pines State School.

The LNP would invest $900,000 on upgrading the school’s learning resource centre with a focus on STEM facilities, he said.

“Stem subjects are a core component of the Pacific Pines State School but their learning resource centre is outdated with no designated STEM classrooms,” Mr Cramp said.
