CONSTRUCTION has begun on the Gold Coast’s newest place of worship after it gained approval.

The Gold Coast Sikh temple will eventually be topped with gold domes but is currently a cleared 8300 sqm site on Helensvale’s Shepperton Road.

The temple, put forward by the Gold Coast Sikh Foundation, was given the green light by the Gold Coast City Council, with its slab expected to be laid next week.

Foundation founder Surjit Singh said he look forward to welcoming the community to the temple.

“We are open to all members of the community and are here to help one another,” he said.

“We will have a grand opening on April 14,2019, the first day of the Sikh new year.”

A soft opening will be held at the temple early next year once construction and fit-out is completed.

It comes as the council received an application for a second Sikh temple.

Public comment has opened on the proposed place of worship, which would be created within a warehouse on Nerang’s Palings Court.

It is not associated with the under-construction temple.

Public comment opens on Monday and runs until August 28.
