Gold Coast schools: St Joseph’s College in Coomera officially opens

The newest school on the Gold Coast has officially opened its doors - 10 months after it welcomed in students.

THE newest school on the Gold Coast was officially opened yesterday, 10 months after it welcomed students through its doors.

St Joseph’s College Coomera held a special blessing ceremony led by Archbishop of Brisbane, Most Rev Mark Coleridge.

The school currently has primary students from prep to year three and secondary students in year seven.

Principal Paul Begg said the ceremony was a celebration of how far the school had come in such a short time.

“The day allowed an opportunity to reflect on our first year, it has been the greatest start to the school.”

The blessings included water from both the Coomera River, the ocean and the mountains to highlight the significance of the area for the school.

“We plan to be full again next year when we add another prep class, and another stream of grade five and seven students.

“It has been a wonderful challenge watching 300 separate people come together as one community.”

Construction on stage two of the school will begin soon to cater for the growing numbers.

When St Joseph’s reaches full enrolment, it will cater for around 1,800 students on the 10 hectare site.
