Gold Coast: QAS paramedics called after brothers trapped under stone trolley at Stonecorp Queensland, Yatala on Thursday morning

A family member of two brothers crushed under a tonne of stone has revealed the harrowing aftermath of the Yatala workplace incident.

A day in the life of an ambulance paramedic

A Gold Coast man dragged himself along the ground to his suffering brother’s aid after both were crushed under a tonne of stone in a horrific workplace incident.

A family member of the two brothers has revealed the harrowing aftermath of Thursday morning’s drama in Yatala, where workers rushed to save the men after they became trapped under the slab of concrete.

Nathan Adams, 23, and Jason Adams, 18, both suffered serious crush injuries after a trolley holding one tonne of concrete they were transporting broke, pinning their legs underneath.

The brothers’ aunt Georgina Steadman-Adams said fellow workers at the Stonecorp site raced to lift the stone off the men using a fork lift.

Ms Steadman-Adams said Jason went into shock immediately after the stone was lifted.

“His heart rate was elevated. Nathan dragged himself across the concrete to his brother and was telling him to breathe to slow down his heart,” she said.

While Nathan suffered a broken foot and crush injuries, there were fears for Jason who suffered serious crush injuries, including swelling from his hip to knee, multiple tibia breaks, severe ankle joint breaks and a broken foot.

Jason was rushed to the Gold Coast University Hospital resuscitation unit, where his heart rate stabilised.

While both are in a stable condition, they face months of rehabilitation and ongoing mental scars from the incident.

“Surgeons have said Jason won’t be able to use his foot and leg the way he used to even when it’s healed,” Ms Steadman-Adams said.

“When one of the nurses was wrapping Jason's leg, he said all he could feel was the crunching of bone. The skin was just holding it together.

“That poor boy, he’s still young and just wants his mum. He’s been waking up with nightmares reliving the incident.

“They are so lucky. They definitely could have lost their lives.”

Stonecorp was Jason’s first job out of high school.

Workplace Health and Safety Queensland has been conducting initial inquiries into the incident.

Ms Steadman-Adams said it had rattled the family just weeks after they recovered from Covid, with close family unable to visit from New Zealand due to travel restrictions.

Unable to be there in-person to support her sister, she has launched a fundraising campaign to help the family pay for household bills while the brothers recover.

“If it wasn’t for Covid, we would all be on planes going there straight away,” the aunt said.

“Nathan has a fiance and one-year-old son. They are the ones who normally help others - they would never ever ask for anything themselves.”

Ms Steadman-Adams also thanked the Stonecorp workers and first responders for coming to the aid of Nathan and Jason.

Workmates raced to help brothers trapped under tonne of stone - January 28

Workers rushed to the aid of two colleagues who found themselves trapped under a trolley of stone weighing about a tonne in a workplace incident at Yatala on Thursday morning.

Workplace Health and Safety Queensland (WHSQ) has been conducting initial inquiries into how the men were injured in the Stonecorp Queensland premises on Telford Circuit at Yatala just before 9.10am.

An 18-year-old man and a 23-year-old man suffered various leg injuries.

The pair, who are brothers, were taken in a stable condition to Gold Coast University Hospital by Queensland Ambulance Service paramedics, including critical care personnel.

Stonecorp co-owner Kelsey Toohey said she believed the brothers would “definitely” make a full recovery and that “the entire factory, everyone” rushed to help after the incident, involving a trolley being pulled.

“Everything all happened very quick,” she said.

“They’re both doing good, in hospital with ankle and foot injuries. They’ll both be okay.

“The other man (a workmate) was trying to move the slabs after they’ve fallen. He’s fine though.

“He’s cut his hand and he went straight through to the medical centre”

WHSQ was considering whether an investigation would be launched, a spokesperson confirmed.

Teen and man trapped under tonne of stone at workplace

Earlier: A TEENAGER and a man have been taken to a Gold Coast hospital after roughly one tonne of stone crushed the pair at a city workplace.

Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) paramedics were called to the workplace on Telford Circuit at Yatala about 9.10am on Thursday.

The male aged in his late teens suffered a leg injury, while a man aged in his 20s suffered an ankle injury, a QAS spokeswoman said.

The ambulance service said it was reported the men had been pinned by one tonne of stone.

It's understood the stone was in a pallet when it landed on the pair.

Paramedics, including critical care personnel, were taking the teen and the man to Gold Coast University Hospital in a stable condition about 10am.

Workplace Health and Safety Queensland will be contacted for comment.
