Gold Coast public housing: Suburbs with the most and least social dwellings

An analysis of suburbs with most public housing and crime rates on the Gold Coast has revealed a startling finding. USE OUR SEARCH BAR TO FIND LOCATIONS

Australia's rich housos

THE Gold Coast is home to more than 2000 social housing dwellings with the majority in the Bonney electorate.

Arundel, Labrador and Biggera Waters, Parkwood and Southport has 470 dwellings according to figures from the Queensland’s Department of Housing and Public Works.

The next area with a high saturation of social housing is the Southport electorate, with 417 dwellings throughout Southport, Molendinar, Ashmore and Benowa.

Surfers Paradise, Coomera and Mudgeeraba are the electorates with the least social housing.

Social and public housing is available to provide stability to people who are least likely to find accommodation through private or managed rental properties.

Social housing is usually stigmatised in Australia and labelled as ghettos – places filled with crime.

But Queensland crime statistics released earlier this year shows that couldn’t be further from the truth.

The electorate with the most assaults is Surfers Paradise – 479 assaults were reported between June 2019 and June 2020.

There is only one social housing dwelling in the Surfers Paradise electorate, which includes Main Beach, Surfers Paradise, Broadbeach Waters and Clear Island Waters.

Meanwhile, the Mudgeerba electorate reported the fewest assaults at 117 and has 74 social housing dwellings.

A spokesperson for the Department of Housing of Social Works told the Bulletin in July that as of June, 2020 there were 3285 applications on the social housing register in the Gold Coast area.

“Allocations for available social housing in a location are determined based on individual needs of the registrant rather than any amount of time,” they said.

Applications take into account a person’s family circumstance, wellbeing, financial status and ability to sustain a tenancy.
