THEY’RE homes that many of us can only dream of.

While much of the country has been struggling with the economic fall-out of the COVID-19 pandemic, it has had little effect on the Gold Coast real estate market, where sales of luxury properties continue to power ahead.

The biggest sale, of 2 Heron Ave Mermaid Beach, netted an incredible $25 million – the highest sale price in a decade on the Gold Coast.

Not far behind was a Hedges Ave property that sold for $22.6m.

It’s not just the top end of the market that is doing well, however.

Property prices continue to hold up well across the Gold Coast, with a number of suburbs recording strong growth.

The latest quarterly report from the Real Estate Institute of Queensland (REIQ) shows Surfers Paradise (5.9 per cent), Robina (3.8 per cent) and Arundel (3.8 per cent) all recorded increases of more than 3 per cent.

A $25 million Mermaid Beach sale equalling a Queensland record for a completed house is being termed a giant adrenaline shot for the Gold Coast property market.

The sale involves the beachfront family home of BreakFree accommodation group founder and ex-AFL footballer Tony Smith plus his wife Simone.

The buyer is a businessman from elite Melbourne suburb Toorak.

Property billionaire Bob Ell and family are off to the beach, smashing a property record in Mermaid Beach’s Multi-Millionaires’ Row.

The Ells have bought a three-level beachfront home in Hedges Ave for close to $22.5 million.

Mr Ell said it was a family-motivated decision – he and wife Bridget have four children under 16.

A giant property at Broadbeach Waters has sold for $12.5 million, setting a 2020 record for a house fronting the Nerang River.

The 249-255 Monaco St residence is the 1300 sqm Villa Cantarocco, which was regarded as the city’s largest house when it was built in the 1970s.

The two-level mansion, which sits on a four-title 3296 sqm site, has been bought by a Melbourne couple making a permanent move to Australia’s tourism capital.

The former family mansion of disgraced Billabong International CEO Matthew Perrin has sold for $12.45 million, setting a record for the elite Surfers Paradise riverfront enclave Cronin Island.

The 15 Southern Cross Drive property, which became one of the Gold Coast’s most controversial homes, has been by bought by a Chinese buyer from Sydney who intends using it as a permanent home.

5. $11.75m: 1-3 La Scala Court, Isle of Capri

John Ramsden, go-ahead legal eagle, can’t regret swooping on a giant Isle of Capri riverfront home as the Gold Coast was struggling out of the global financial crisis in 2013.

The property, Riverpoint, had been auctioned by a mortgagee but bidding stopped at $3.9 million.

In came the Kiwi-born John and, in a gutsy move, tabled a $4.1 million offer that was accepted.

Seven years on, and after investing in improvements, he’s sold the three-level La Scala Court mansion for $11.75 million.

THE price momentum in the Gold Coast’s most expensive beachfront street, Mermaid Beach’s Multi-Millionaires’ Row, has grown again with the $11.25 million sale of a Harry Seidler-influenced home.

The sale, by former cotton farmer Alan Frost to a Gold Coast buyer, comes on the heels of a $10 million-plus deal in the street, with another in the $11 million range brewing.

Mr Frost paid $2.9 million for his two-level home in 2000.

The Abedians, of Sunland Group fame, are off to the beach after an $11 million buy in Mermaid Beach’s Multi-Millionaires’ Row.

Nava, wife of Sunland managing-director Sahba Abedian, has bought a twin-title 900 sqm beachfront Hedges Ave lot.
