Man on run after alleged Gold Coast bank robbery

Police have made an arrest after an alleged brazen broad daylight armed robbery of a Coolangatta bank.

An interstate manhunt was sparked on Tuesday after witnesses reported a male entering the NAB branch on Griffith St around lunchtime allegedly wearing a face covering and armed with a knife.

Police allege money was “demanded” from staff before a man ran off with a sum of cash.

Southern Cross security guard Imran Ali who was called to the bank at 1pm said a man who “looked like a junkie” allegedly asked tellers for cash before fleeing on foot.

“He came with a covered face and knife and asked for money inside,” Mr Ali claimed.

Greenlife Medical security guard Jarrod Graham said a man fled south towards Tweed after allegedly flashing the weapon.

“One of the homeless or junkies came into our NAB, flashed a knife to one of the bank tellers, and the staff were ordered to give over $400,” he claimed.

Police at the scene taped off the area and declared a crime scene but refused to comment further.

Les Graue, owner of nearby Concrete Lines Skate Shop, said: It’s been very quiet, but people are talking about it. I haven’t heard of a bank robbery in 15 or 20 years.”

No staff were physically harmed.

A Gold Coast police spokesman said a man allegedly fled the scene with cash.

Officers had mounted a manhunt on Tuesday for a man last seen walking along Chalk St.

Officers from the NSW Police Force arrested a 48-year-old Sunshine Coast man, Adam Kim Cusack, at about 7.30pm on Tuesday near the Pacific Hwy at Ballina, in Northern NSW.

He faced Lismore District Court on Wednesday, where Queensland Police officers lodged a request for his extradition back across the border where he would be held in the Southport Watchhouse. Charges were expected to be laid before the end of the day.

Cusack appeared in handcuffs in the court docks wearing casual clothes before the application was granted by the magistrate.

He is expected to appear in Southport Magistrates Court on Thursday.
