TERRIFIED residents are arming themselves with bats and clubs to defend their pets after a savage dog attack in a Gold Coast park.

Two Staffordshire terriers launched an unprovoked attack on an English springer spaniel in the Sun Valley park in Ashmore last week, leaving the dog with severe injuries.

ATTACK DOG OWNER: IT’S NOT THE FIRST ATTACK

The savage dogs have been blamed for three dog attacks but are still free as Gold Coast City Council refuses to act.

Their owner has simply been ordered to post a “menacing dog” sign on his gate.

Gold Coast City Council refused to elaborate on the investigation.

Nearby residents are furious the council has been slow to act. Kristina Bradford said the attack left her terrified for her dogs, Daisee and Bambam.

“I take a bat with me whenever we go to the park,” Ms Bradford said.

“Ninety per cent of the people who live in this area are scared of those dogs.

“I’m traumatised by the attack and if it happened to my babies, I don’t know what I would do.

“I will do whatever it takes to protect them.”

The Bulletin reported the attack on Tuesday, revealing the victim, Patricia, feared that her beloved English springer spaniel Jasmine would be “torn to pieces”.

The savage attack left the dog with serious injuries and Patricia suffered bites to her hand.

The owner of the attack dogs has offered to pay for the vet bills and said the dogs escaped when a tradie had accidentally left the gates to his home open.

He yesterday confirmed the dogs had previously attacked another pet.

He said he had “raised my back fence to six feet” and installed “top-of-the-line security”, and added the dog that attacked Jasmine was a beautifully natured dog until she was mauled herself by another dog.
