Mythbusting Organ and Tissue Donation

A young Gold Coast mum who died six weeks after the birth of her baby girl has given a “second chance” to five strangers through organ donation.

The community has rallied around the Sime family as they struggle to come to terms with their tragic loss, raising $35,000 for them in just five days.

Shannon Sime, 29, died from a stroke on August 8 – six weeks after she gave birth to a girl.

Shannon’s shattered husband Scott is unable to work for the foreseeable future as he navigates life as a widower to a newborn baby.

A family friend has revealed the mum’s organs were donated after she died, giving five other people the “ultimate gift of life”.

Scott has given permission for his wife’s story to be shared to raise awareness of organ donation and the symptoms of stroke.

It is understood Shannon showed no obvious underlying health issues before her sudden death.

According to the Stroke Foundation, in 2020 24 per cent of total first-ever strokes occurred in people aged 54 years and under.

The 29-year-old was described in an online fundraising page as having a “zest for life” and a passion for adventure and travel.

She and Scott moved to Surfers Paradise in 2020 to embark on a new chapter in their lives.

“Shannon had an infectious personality that made an impact on everyone she met,” the page said.

“She was always positive and found the good in every situation.

“She loved doing things for others whether it be volunteering at a homeless shelter on Christmas Day or cutting the hair of women affected by domestic violence – she felt better when helping others.”

According to the page, all money raised will go directly to Scott and his daughter.

“Any support we can provide to him and his beautiful daughter will go a long way in helping them cope with their tragic loss as they learn to live without their beautiful wife and mother,” it said.

“If we can learn anything from this situation it has to be to hug your loved ones a little bit longer and that little bit tighter, tell them you love them and go find your next adventure – because none of us know what day will be our last.”
