Petrol prices: How to save at the pump

MOTORISTS have been told to skip the bowser as petrol prices skyrocket to a statewide high on the Gold Coast today.

This morning the city broke the record for the highest daily average for regular unleaded fuel in Queensland.

The average price of unleaded 91 across the Coast leapt to $1.73/litre, thrashing the previous record of $1.68/litre.

In Brisbane prices are hovering around $1.72, while Ipswich is sitting at an average of $1.68 – both record highs.

RACQ’s Lauren Richie said despite popular belief, the price hike wasn’t linked to the start of school holidays.

“It’s actually a bit of an urban myth, this time last year we were actually at the cheap stage of the cycle,” she said.

“There’s really high retail margins … that combined with OPEC further restricting oil production so that’s slowed down to a higher price in Singapore which is where we get our oil price from, so combining those two factors has resulted in incredibly high prices on the Gold Coast.

“It’s too far out from Christmas to predict where it will be on Christmas, but we would expect it to start dropping in the next few days.”

Ms Richie said it was “concerning” to see prices so high and urged motorists to avoid filling up if possible.

“Obviously this isn’t a record anyone wants to break,” she said.

“If you do need to fill up only do the bare minimum for immediate use.

“Once we see the cycle peak, which we imagine will be today or maybe tomorrow, it does drop off quite quickly.”

But there is still cheap fuel on offer, if you know where to look.

This morning a handful of Gold Coast petrol stations were still offering Unleaded 91 for well below $1.70/litre.
