The empowering women shaping 2020

JUDE Kalman might have two unfinished degrees but that hasn’t stopped her from having an interesting career jetsetting to far-flung corners of the globe.

The Mudegeeraba woman has been nominated in the Harvey Norman Women of the Year awards for helping to give a voice to the voiceless.

Ms Kalman is the founder of Fish Films, a company that specialises in publicising the work of charities and non-profits aiding underprivileged communities.

“I’ve always wanted to be in film, since I was little,” Ms Kalman said.

“I did teaching but didn’t finish my degree. After I travelled a bit and came back and studied film, I didn’t finish my degree again.

WHY TYPE 1 DIABETES WILL NEVER STOP BRITTANY

“But I started working on (film) sets and worked my way through the industry doing all sorts of things.

“I started doing stuff on the side for NGOs (non-government organisations) and charities and social entrepreneurs. My skill set is production, so I just wanted to really help people who were doing good things.”

Ms Kalman’s passion for telling stories resonated with critics and audiences worldwide. She has won an Australian Cinematographers Society Award for her work on Swell Sculpture Festival, was a Gold Coast Music Award finalist for co-directing Amy Shark’s music video Weekends, and her recent self-funded trip to Nigeria to produce Uncontained Love: Love > Fear won a 2018 CMAA award.
