A former diplomat and foreign affairs adviser to Kevin Rudd has been named as the latest Labor candidate in a hotly-contested Gold Coast seat.

KEVIN Rudd’s former foreign affairs adviser has been named as the latest Gold Coast Labor candidate in the 2020 election.
Former diplomat and teacher Dr Carl Ungerer will contest the seat of Mermaid Beach, taking on sitting LNP MP Ray Stevens.
Dr Ungerer represented Australia in Fiji and Geneva for many years and now lives on the southern Gold Coast with wife Candice and young daughter Heidi.
Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said he would bring an “international perspective” to her election team.
“We’re living through one of the most unstable and uncertain times in a century, and Dr Ungerer’s international experience will bring important perspective as we implement our economic recovery plan,” she said.
“Carl’s passion, knowledge and enthusiasm are welcome additions to our strong and connected team on the Gold Coast.”
Dr Ungerer said he hoped to speak with the community about a plan for economic and job recovery.
The Motorists Party’s Suphakan Somsriruen, One Nation’s Stephen James and Legalise Cannabis Qld’s Deb Lynch are also standing against Mr Stevens.
