The aged get big wins in Budget 2018-19

BOTH the young and old will all have a place inside the Gold Coast’s newest aged care development.

Construction will begin in April on the Odyssey aged care project, a three-tower project which its developer says will be more like a five-star hotel than a traditional nursing home.

The project is earmarked for the corner of Christine Ave and The Crestway in Robina. Residents will move into the first building — a six-level tower — in July 2020.

It will be followed by seven and eight-storey towers.

Odyssey boss Phil Usher has worked in aged care for nearly 20 years and said his project would be closer to a resort than standard aged care projects.

“The model is built around a resort style environment where couples can stay together, pets are welcome, grandkids have sleepovers, and most importantly your dignity and independence are highly respected,” he said.

The first stage of the development will include 148 luxury apartments, a leisure centre, restaurant and piano lounges among other amenities.

A skygarden will also be included providing a view of Robina.

A childcare centre will also be included to cater for staff while the third stage is also expected to house facilities for young people who are disabled.

Mr Usher said an on-site childcare centre had many benefits.

“There is a symbiotic benefit for young kids being close to grandparents and most carers have kids so it makes it easier for staff and de-stresses them.”

Department "working on" draft changes to restraint regulations

It is the latest in a range of retirement age developments which have been approved by the Gold Coast City Council in the past two years.

More than $1 billion worth of projects are under construction or in the planning stages.

But rather than go into nursing homes, many are instead selling the family home and downsizing into spacious luxury units.

Data released last year showed that the over-65s market will be worth more than $3.5 billion to the city’s economy over the next five years.
