Gold Coast Desalination Plant to work at full capacity over summer, to provide 133M litres

The Gold Coast desalination plant will be fired up “to full capacity” to provide the water grid up to 133 million litres a day – just six months after it provided crucial drought relief. Here’s why.

Sydney Desalination Plant provides water to households

THE GOLD Coast desalination plant will provide up to 133 million litres into the South East Queensland Water Grid when it’s fired up again this summer.

The Tugun plant will take over while the Mt Crosby plant goes offline for the next stage of critical works.

TUGUN DESALINATION PLANT STARTED TO SAVE QUEENSLAND

It last operated at full capacity between November 2019 and January 2020, providing crucial relief when the water grid dropped below 60 per cent capacity.

Natural Resources Minister Dr Anthony Lynham said the Mt Crosby works will take more than two and a half years to complete.

“Having the desalination plant and the Water Grid available provides significant security of supply during times when we need to take major water treatment plants offline,” he said.

WHY THE COAST IS USING SO MUCH WATER

“It allows critical works to be undertaken in a cost-effective and efficient way. This is about being smart in how we use our water assets.”

The plant filters seawater through a four-metre “mushroom-like” inlet structure on the seabed, removing all impurities to create drinking water.
