A BIRD sanctuary has been damaged after 400 people attended an illegal doof party in Byron Bay last night.

Police were called to the National Parks and Wildlife (NPWS) Bird Sanctuary at Belongil Creek just after midnight after being alerted to a large party.

They say initially around 400 people were at the party, but many scattered through the bush or onto the beach after officers arrived.

A number of people were spoken to by police and a generator and music equipment were seized. The NPWS is working with police to take further action.

The sensitive bird nesting site was disturbed and vegetation trampled by the large crowds.

Police also spoke with a 26-year-old woman from overseas and noticed a plastic bag in her jacket pocket.

The plastic bag allegedly contained a number of green and red tablets which police allege are MDMA.

The woman was arrested and taken to Byron Bay Police Station, where she was charged with possessing a prohibited drug.

She will appear in Byron Bay Local Court on December 14.
