A man accused of slashing a female jogger in an attempted armed robbery allegedly said to the woman “don’t scream” as he approached her carrying a small knife, a court has heard.

Brandon Lee Jukes, of New South Wales, allegedly told police he chose his victim because she was a woman.

The 20-year-old appeared in Southport Magistrates Court via video link on Tuesday where he failed in an attempt at bail.

He is facing charges of attempted kidnapping, attempted robbery, unlawful wounding and possession of a knife in a public place.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Natalie Gorman opposed his application, saying the charges were “extremely serious”.

The court heard the woman was walking along the beachside footpath on Marine Pde at Kirra on September 20 when her attention was drawn to a man sitting on a low-brick wall.

Sgt Gorman alleges Jukes stood up, and pulled a black face mask over his nose to conceal his face before approaching the woman, attempting to corner her, while armed with a small blade.

“He’s then told the victim don’t scream,” she said detailing the police allegations.

“He was very close to her at the time. She was in fear of her safety. She attempted to break free from the defendant, and punched him in the head with her right hand.”

The court heard Jukes allegedly slashed the woman’s left forearm, causing a 6cm laceration.

Jukes then allegedly fled.

Police launched an investigation finding dumped clothing. Police used CCTV to track a suspect to the beachfront at Coolangatta.

Two tents were found by police. Jukes was allegedly found in one, where police could see a black face mask and small paring knife, which allegedly returned a positive test indicating potential presence of blood.

Jukes allegedly told police he had been at the campsite alone all night smoking cannabis. He allegedly said he left the tent about 5am.

“He stated that he waited at the offence location and chose the victim based on her being a woman. He only intended to rob her,” Sgt Gorman said reading the police allegations.

Jukes, who represented himself during the bail application, said he would go to rehab, wear a GPS tracker and report daily if required.

“All I’m asking for is an opportunity to prove my worthiness to be out there in the community,” he pleaded.

“I’ve lost family, I’ve lost everything while I’ve been in here, your honour. I’ve lost everything.

“I’ve been bashed since I’ve been in here … I’ve got a busted eye socket, I’ve had my nose broken.

“I want to be able to go home. I don’t want to die in jail, your honour.”

Magistrate John McInnes refused bail citing the “seriousness of the offences” combined with Jukes’ “significant” NSW criminal record.

The matter was adjourned until November 2.
