A Gold Coast hotelier has been crowned the best in Queensland at an awards ceremony last night.

A GOLD Coast hotelier has been named the best in Queensland at the Queensland Hotel Association’s Awards for Excellence last night.

Boardwalk Tavern’s Matt Coorey was named Queensland’s Hotelier of the Year after eight years working at the venue, and more than two decades in hospitality.

The 43-year-old said the award left him stunned.

“I’m overawed, I’m shocked, I’m humbled, I can’t believe I won,” he said.

“It was completely unexpected. But it’s not just my award, my main partners are my staff, I tell them that a lot.

“I did remember to thank my wife.”

He added the plaque would “go to dust” somewhere in the pub from now on.

A panel of judges takes several months to decide the winners for the annual gala ceremony.

Broadwater MP David Crisafulli said he was delighted to see a “young pioneer” recognised.

“When you walk into the Boardwalk Tavern you get the sense of a welcoming environment from all the staff,” he said.

“That standard is set by Mr Coorey.”
