A new video reveals the radical transformation about to take place at Gold Coast Airport as construction work on the terminal expansion steps up.

CONSTRUCTION work on the Gold Coast Airport terminal expansion is about to take off with the arrival of two big cranes on site.

Two nine-tonne tower cranes have been installed in the past two weeks as foundation works near completion on the $500 million redevelopment, which will double the existing terminal footprint.

New video has given the clearest view yet of the expanded terminal, which will feature aerobridges, retail space and a new departure lounge.

The precinct’s first hotel, a 192-room Rydges, is also under construction.

“These cranes send a signal to visitors, airline partners, residents and investors that Gold Coast Airport is on the move,” Queensland Airports CEO Chris Mills said. “These projects will transform the gateway to the Gold Coast and northern NSW.”

Mr Mills added the next phase was about delivery of the terminal and hotel projects.

“We are so excited to see all of our hard work and preparation in the past few years finally start to take shape with the development,” he said.

“These cranes are a tangible sign of the high level of activity going on in the precinct.”

About 1500 jobs will be created during construction of the southern terminal expansion alone – in addition to those generated at the hotel.

Lendlease Building Queensland general manager Brad Protheroe said project works continued to steadily grow.

“We currently have up to 160 workers on site at any given time and have inducted more than 600 people since start of construction,” he said.

“So far we have awarded work packages to 10 local subcontractors and suppliers – that’s approximately $31.6 million worth of work so far contributing to the Gold Coast economy.

“These numbers are only set to increase as we approach peak construction in mid to late 2020.”
