Broc Feeney still remembers watching Supercars racing around the Gold Coast street circuit as a “little fella” - now he’s pinching himself ahead of lining up as a race contender.

The 21-year-old who replaced champion driver Jamie Whincup at Red Bull Ampol Racing said on Thursday: “I’ve seen some pretty cool photos from back in the day when I was a little fella’ racing go-karts and I realise how lucky I am to be doing what I’m doing.”

He now has another “cool photo” for the collection after being part of a stunning Supercars stunt on Thursday, taking over Sundale Bridge for a wild promotion.

Feeney and fellow drivers Anton De Pasquale, Jack Le Brocq and James Golding were involved in a stunning promotional stunt shutting down busy Sundale Bridge to make way for their Gen3 Supercars on Thursday morning.

Acting Mayor Donna Gates said it was a welcome display to celebrate the Supercars Championship’s return.

“We look forward to a record attendance, a record TV audience and record partying,” she said.

“We hope Broc Feeney leads the way and it’s his party this weekend – sorry to the other drivers here this morning but go Broc.”

Minister for Tourism Stirling Hinchliffe said 200,000 motorsport fans were expected to attend with 20,000 from out-of-town with a $55m impact.

“It’s a huge boom for the local visitor economy,” he said. “This is one of the very important events as part of out events calendar throughout the year.”

Feeney told the Bulletin after the bridge stunt: “I used to come to this race all the time and I’d buy Jamie Whincup merchandise, sit on the start grid and watch the race cars go around.

“Now I’m that guy doing it. I’m pretty fortunate to be in the position I’m in.”

The Gold Coast-born-and-bred driver said he’s wanted the GC500 surfboard trophy “for a very long time” but admits there was “no doubt” a win may be “far fetched at the moment”.

“I just want to get up on that podium - they’re the coolest trophies you get all year,” he said.

“But we’ll go out and keep doing what we’re doing,” he said.

Ticket sales are very strong with record crowds expected.
