A Gold Coast ambassador, passionate volunteer and the goodest of boys has sadly died after a short battle with a life-threatening disorder.
Gary the groodle served as an AmbassaPaw dog at the Gold Coast Airport since 2018, offering emotional support to anxious passengers before their flights.
On Sunday, Gary’s owners announced his untimely passing to social media, writing: “You were and will forever be so loved. Rest easy now Gaz.”
A week earlier, the therapy dog was struck down with gastric dilatation and volvulus (GDV) – a disorder that occurs when a gas-filled stomach twists upon itself.
The life-threatening emergency requires urgent surgery to correct.
An online fundraiser created to help pay for Gary’s vet bills explained he took a “turn for the worse” after emergency surgery and another minor surgery.
Almost $14,000 had been raised for his treatment.
“We do have pet insurance, but our annual cap was reached in the first night,” his owners wrote.
“Money is not our focus, but obviously this helps tremendously with keeping our thoughts purely on getting the boy out of this mess.
“Gaz is more than one person’s best friend.
“He is too young and has too many good years left to bring happiness and love to his owners and all the people he helps as a serving therapy dog.”
