Future Gold Coast: The ‘kick ass’ wish for Southern Cross University

A Gold Coast university vice-chancellor has listed his future wishes for the local campus, saying one issue in particular needed to be ‘kick ass.’

SOUTHERN Cross University vice-chancellor Adam Shoemaker has listed “kick ass” student accommodation on his wish list for the future of the growing Gold Coast campus.

Mr Shoemaker spoke at the Future Gold Coast luncheon as part of a speaker panel that including Mayor Tom Tate and The Star’s Geoff Hogg.

He said the university is ideally placed to collaborate with other businesses, such as the Rydges hotel under construction, to deliver events and conferences.

“When hotel comes up, we said do not worry about big conferences, we have a 560-seat beautifully kitted out lecture theatre. Come and use ours, share our facilities.

“Where else can you walk to the hotel (from the airport) and walk to the conference and get on a flight and go back?”

He said he would like to see Asics build a sports science centre next to its campus and “kick ass student accommodation”.

“That is what we need,” he said.
