YOUNG romantics and grieving families are furious hundreds of “love locks” have been cut from the Point Danger headland.
The padlocks, etched with messages of love, were stripped from wires on fences overlooking the beach yesterday and the Gold Coast City Council warns more are yet to go.
The move comes as the world-famous Pont des Arts bridge in Paris was stripped of its love locks. The bridge held thousands of locks placed by travelling couples.
A council spokeswoman said the Point Danger locks had damaged the wires on fences which formed a safety barrier around the clifftop.
“Love locks are removed from city infrastructure when the locks are causing damage and/or accelerating deterioration, such as rusting or overstraining,” the spokeswoman said.
“At Point Danger the balustrade wiring becomes overstrained.”
A Bulletin investigation revealed clusters of the metallic tokens of affection were littered along the coastline.
There are dozens at the North Burleigh headland and many more are hanging next to the path on Greenmount Hill.
Banora Point woman Eileen Brown, 74, lost a lock honouring her son in 2013 when council cleared Greenmount.
“Our son died from a melanoma, so we put the lock up in his memory,” she said.
“The council took the padlock and refused to give it back.”
