Residents of an embattled Gold Coast island community have been dealt a fresh blow, with access cut to some of their last remaining utilities.
Showers, toilets and pool facilities were closed and gated off to residents of the Couran Cove Island Resort, South Stradbroke Island earlier this week.
It comes after electricity and water was disconnected to more than 100 homes on the island last Wednesday amid allegations of unpaid levies.
There are five body corporates involved on the island, with complex court proceedings playing out over the allegations of millions of dollars in unpaid fees.
Island resident Mick Reichle said community members discovered the island’s main pool facilities containing showers and toilets had been closed off without warning.
“We were having our showers and using the toilets there because we don’t have running water,” he said.
“They are the closest essential services.”
Mr Reichle said residents - many of whom were elderly - would now have to walk an extra kilometre to access another available shower and toilet block.
A Couran Cove spokesman said the pool facilities were closed because a lack of funding meant essential works to the water treatment plant could not be undertaken.
“As a result, the current limited water supply is being supplied to a set number of dwellings in accordance with production capacity,” he said.
There have also been reports of waste bins overflowing in the eco precinct of the island, but the Couran Cove spokesman said waste collection was still continuing.
Residents received an emergency supply of water on Tuesday morning, with more expected to arrive early next week.
