Four chicks who were dumped at a shelter are looking for their forever home in time to celebrate Easter with their new family.
Juliette, Thelma, Harriet and Sweat Pea were dropped at the Animal Welfare League Gold Coast animal rehoming centre at only two weeks old.
Animal Welfare League Queensland communications manager Craig Montgomery said while it was uncommon to get chicks dumped at the centre, they regularly got adult hens or roosters.
“Unfortunately, child education facilities still believe it is ethical to have chicken-hatching programs as part of their curriculum,” he said.
“Once they have served their purpose, their fate is uncertain, many of these animals often end up in shelters or are euthanised.”
Mr Montgomery said they encouraged kindergartens and schools to use DVDs, excursions, or egg-hatching model kits as an alternative.
He said while the four chicks were still very young, they think two of them may be roosters.
Mr Montgomery said anyone wanting to adopt them would need to have access to clean water, grass and protection from weather and predators.
He acknowledged it was a commitment, given chickens and roosters can live for four or more years.
“Make sure you interact with them daily,” Mr Montgomery said.
“Hand feeding them is a great way to bond with your feathered friends.”
