Five dead as Queensland faces catastrophic flooding

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a severe weather warning for the Gold Coast.

Damaging winds, large hailstones and heavy rainfall that’s hit the Coast late this afternoon is set continue into the evening.

The Bureau has warned of potential flash flooding for the Gold Coast region, with the affected area ranging from Ipswich to Coolangatta.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services advises that people should:

- Move your car under cover or away from trees.

- Secure loose outdoor items.

- Seek shelter, preferably indoors and never under trees.

- Beware of fallen trees and powerlines.

For emergency assistance contact the SES on 132 500.

BoM senior meteorologist Salim Hanniffy said in terms of rainfall the Gold Coast had 20 to 30mm in half an hour on Monday afternoon.

It moved through pretty quickly, he said but added there was the potential for showers and maybe a storm early in the afternoon.

Moving forward into the week, the Coast was looking at temperatures averaging eight to 10 degrees lower than average. The start of summer would bring 21-22 degrees.

“Wednesday, Thursday will bring a lot of thick cloud and persistent rain which will bring cool temperatures in their low 20s right in time for the start of summer.”

He called it a “very significant drop for this time of year”.

“Thick cloud cover and south easterly wind makes it colder.”
