Fisheries Queensland removes shark nets from Gold Coast beaches as wild weather batters city

Shark nets on the Gold Coast have been removed until further notice as a result of the weather system that is battering the region.
On Wednesday afternoon Fisheries Queensland Shark Program Operations Coordinator Sam Fray said the Gold Coast was forecast to have winds up to 35 knots and four metre swells until later Thursday.
“We will keep a close eye on the weather and teams are ready to respond to reinstall the gear, or check gear that couldn’t be removed, when weather condition allow,” he said.
Mr Fray said it was possible for some equipment to break loose during rough conditions.
“High seas can cause some equipment to come adrift, and loose shark control equipment can be a danger to swimmers and boats,” he said.
“Anyone who sees any unsecured shark control equipment including ropes, netting or buoys, should call the Shark Control Program Hotline on 1800 806 891.”
