Two young boys were rushed to hospital after an hours-long basement inferno forced an emergency evacuation at a Surfers Paradise apartment complex – just hours before emergency services were called to a fire at the Hilton Surfers Paradise only streets away.

Fire crews arrived at Anchor Down Apartments on Peninsular Drive at 7.20pm on Thursday.

Queensland Fire Department (QFD) had nine crews respond to the fire at the bottom of the residential complex.

A QFD spokeswoman said the fire was contained to the basement level and took roughly five hours for crews to extinguish.

“Crews were evacuating people from the structure,” the spokeswoman said.

”Everyone was evacuated and the fire was out by midnight.”

Multiple people were in the hands of responding paramedics.

A Queensland Ambulance Service spokesman said two primary-school-aged boys were transported to Gold Coast University Hospital in a stable condition with possible smoke inhalation.

The fire investigation unit is investigating the cause of the fire.

Nearby residents took to social media calling the scene “frightening”.

“It was very frightening as a concerned resident of close buildings to watch it unfold,” one said.
