A man has died after his car collided with a guardrail on the M1.

Emergency services were called to the incident on the northbound M1 at Mudgeeraba at about 9.30am on Friday.

A Queensland Police spokesman said the car struck a barrier near exit 77 off-ramp.

Police officers were first on the scene and closed the off-ramp while they waited for more first responders to arrive.

A man – who was the driver and sole occupant of the vehicle – suffered head injuries and was rushed to Gold Coast University Hospital in a life-threatening condition, but later died.

Police investigations into the circumstances of the crash are ongoing.

The Forensic Crash Unit is appealing to any witnesses or anyone with relevant dashcam footage to come forward.

It was reported earlier that the crash was a mental health incident.
