Electrical fault in lifts at RACV Royal Pines Resort on Gold Coast as AFL teams prepare to move in for season restart

Three people were taken to hospital after the incident on the Gold Coast, which occurred as AFL teams settle in.

A SUSPECTED electrical fault inside RACV Royal Pines Resort has resulted in three people being taken to hospital as AFL teams settle in to kickstart the season.

Fremantle Dockers and West Coast Eagles are flying in to temporarily base themselves at the Ross St, Benowa resort and “quarantine hub”.

Adelaide Crows and Port Adelaide will base their teams at Palm Meadows, a second hub on the Gold Coast.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Service (QFES) firefighters were called to an apparent “structure fire” at Royal Pines about 8.50am this morning, a spokeswoman confirmed.

A fire alarm was activated by smoke emanating from a lift shaft, the building was evacuated and when firefighters arrived they found in-house technicians working on the problem.

Firefighters were not able to find any active fire inside the high-rise, despite the smoke.

Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) paramedics were also called to Royal Pines.

Five people were assessed by paramedics at the scene for smoke inhalation and three were taken to Gold Coast University Hospital in a stable condition for assessment.

Queensland Police have deemed the incident “non-suspicious”.

It’s not known how or if the issue at Royal Pines will affect the AFL teams’ stay. RACV management has been contacted for comment.
