One of Gold Coast’s best-known high thrill theme park rides is set to reopen after almost a year offline.
The Giant Drop – the tallest and fastest ride in the Southern Hemisphere reaching speeds of up to 135km/h while falling 39 stories – will reopen at Dreamworld this weekend.
The ride closed on April 25 last year for a refurbishment which included the installation of lighting, a repaint and continued removal of the track from the former Tower of Terror II ride which closed in November 2019.
The ride now features lights spelling ‘DREAMWORLD’ along the side and a bold new colour scheme.
The refurbishment is part of a $55 million investment into the park over 2023 and 2024 which will bring new attractions.
Dreamworld CEO Greg Yong said they “couldn’t wait” to reopen their “most iconic” attraction.
“We’re committed to providing our guests and passholders with the best fun and entertainment the Gold Coast has to offer, and the Giant Drop refurbishment is the first of many upgrade we’re making to the park to bolster your experience at Dreamworld,” he said.
Dreamworld will re-open the ride on June 23 during the park’s Night Market.
The Night Market, which has ran every Friday and Saturday from 5pm to 9pm, features a selection of market foods and entertainment.
Entry is $2 and free for all children, passholders and guests of the park who visited during the day and wished to stay after dark.
