Dog nurses orphaned kittens to health at the Coombabah AWL

THEY are traditionally sworn enemies, but the lives of two orphaned kittens were saved when they were taken into nurture by a maternal canine.
After Coombabah’s Animal Welfare League Queensland volunteers had no luck in matching the now four-weel-old kittens with a cat, it was four-year-old Fox Terrier ‘Gigi’ who stepped in to save the day.
AWLQLD spokeswoman Brooke Whitney said Gigi was mourning the loss of her own puppies who died at birth and was eager to help out.
“When (Gigi) came in to the shelter she was heavily pregnant and sadly only one of her puppies survived,” Ms Whitney said.
“When she saw the little kittens which were very malnourished, she took them on board ever since and essentially saved their life.

Gigi, her pup ‘Lucky’ and kittens Arnold and Oscar are now currently in foster care by long serving volunteer Leah Westwood.
Ms Whitney said all the animals will be up for adoption in the coming weeks with an announcement made on their facebook page.
“We would love to keep them all together if someone is interested but if not they can be adopted separately,” she said.
“I’m a bit worried (the kittens) are going to start barking in a few weeks.
“They love their brother Lucky and they all get a long.
“It’s a bit of a modern family.”
