A new venue with a Michelin Star chef is bringing culinary class to an unexpected location.
Japanese restaurant One Eighty opened in Labrador on December 4 after two-and-a-half years of planning.
One Eighty co-owner Daiji Takashima said he flew Michelin awarded chef Akihiro Kitade from Japan to help Gold Coasters “enjoy real yakitori”.
The restaurant’s sample menu offers two packages priced at $110 per person and $150 per person and features chicken skewers, prawn tempura, sashimi, Wagyu beef sukiyaki and even an eye-fillet sandwich.
Mr Takashima said he created the signature sandwich while learning different dishes in Tokyo.
“Our head chef Akihiro Kitade is a sommelier and he can advice wine pairing or sake pairing,” he said.
He said One Eighty was his first restaurant venture and he was proud to make his debut on the Gold Coast.
“Everyone told me it’s the worst time to open with Australia facing inflation,” Mr Takashima said.
“But I said it’s the best time to open as it will test us to be successful or not, especially when many restaurants are closing down.
“If we can be successful now, we can be successful anytime.”
One Eighty is at 1 Frank St in Labrador.
