HOME Affairs Minister Karen Andrews’ parliamentary office on the Gold Coast has been targeted by vandals who have smashed glass and spray-painted a message on the building.
Images have emerged showing the glass door and windows of the McPherson MP’s office on Watts Dr at Varsity Lakes shattered in multiple places, seemingly with rocks.
Red graffiti scrawled on the building during the attack overnight reads “8 Years” – perhaps referring to the eight years since the federal government altered asylum seeker policy, preventing those arriving by boat from settling in Australia.
An “#8YearsTooLong” hashtag has been trending on Twitter in recent days.
Queensland Police Service (QPS) and Australian Federal Police officers have been on scene.
Ms Andrews said: “Police are currently investigating an attack on my electorate office.”
“CCTV footage of the incident is being reviewed,” she stated.
“I condemn this behaviour and will work with the police to find those responsible.
“I’m glad no staff were inside at the time and no one was hurt.”
Gold Coast police believe the incident occurred about 12.30am.
Investigations were ongoing as of midday, a police spokeswoman said.
