Crashes mar second day of Gold Coast Show long weekend

A car has rolled and taken out a powerline in the latest in a slew of nasty crashes to mar the second day of the Gold Coast Show long weekend.

A POWERLINE has been brought down after a dramatic crash in Ashmore – the latest in a string of nasty incidents on a day of carnage on the Gold Coast.

The powerline was taken out after a HiLux and a BMW collided at the junction of Wardoo St and Southport Nerang Rd just after 1.40pm, causing one of the vehicles to roll.

Police were at the scene directing traffic around the downed powerline, while Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) paramedics rushed two people involved in the accident to nearby Gold Coast University Hospital. Both were said to be in stable condition.

Bizarrely, another crash between two vehicles took place at the junction of Wardoo St and Smith St in Southport at about the same time.

Paramedics assessed three people as a result of that incident, one of whom was later taken to hospital.

At 11.30am there was a multi-vehicle crash at the Yatala South on-ramp to the M1. Nobody was badly hurt in that incident.

The rider of a motorbike at Binstead Way in Pacific Pines was not so lucky however, being taken to hospital in a stable condition after a collision with a car.

A pedestrian was also taken to hospital after being hit by a car in Burleigh Heads just after 8am.

It was the second serious incident there within hours. At 2.57am there was a crash between an unmarked police car and another vehicle on Bermuda Street and Reedy Creek Road which took out a set of traffic lights.

Two police officers and the driver of the other vehicle were all taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Ironically, this week was Queensland Road Safety Week. Speaking on Wednesday to mark the occasion, Minister for Transport and Main Roads Mark Bailey said all drivers had a role to play in keeping road users safe.

“During Queensland Road Safety Week, we’re reminding Queenslanders that their behaviour on the road has an impact and that road safety starts with all of us,” he said.
