A scramble is on to find a solution to traffic and parking chaos around CBUS Super Stadium for Saturday’s sold-out NRL derby blockbuster between the Titans and Broncos. Read about the plan

Stakeholders are meeting in a scramble to find a solution to traffic and parking chaos as the sold-out sign is put up at CBUS Super Stadium for Saturday’s Titans-Broncos clash.

Robina-based councillor Dan Doran is calling for the stadium to improve event day traffic and parking after more than 150 patrons were slugged with infringement notices for illegal parking during a recent game.

The Gold Coast Titans on Wednesday announced general tickets had been sold out for what would be the club’s biggest game of the year.

“Over the past four weeks, I have met with angry local residents, council officers, the Titans, and management of Cbus Super Stadium in an attempt to improve event day outcomes for local residents and fans,” Cr Doran said.

He believes Saturday’s match will be an opportunity to trial improved traffic outcomes in the lead-up to a likely sold-out World Cup Qualifier in September when the Gold Coast hosts the Socceroos for the first time.

“In just five weeks Cbus Super Stadium will be home to a sold-out International Football match, when the Socceroos clash with Bahrain,” he said.

“The suggested measures are minor and very cost-effective, while expected to make a huge difference in preventing parking infringements and the prevention of dangerous parking that could block emergency service vehicles from accessing homes.”

The short-term measures proposed by Mr Doran include:

*Human traffic controllers to be stationed at the entrance to The Promenade as per the

changes made to Woody Views Way;

*More controllers to be stationed at the entrance to Peach Drive as per the

changes made to Woody Views Way;

* Other controllers to be stationed at Cheltenham Park to inform drivers of the

parking limitations;

* Better communication to patrons about the opportunity to park at Varsity Lakes Train

Station and get the train to the stadium.

“Council officers have already implemented changes within the precinct with increased signage to avoid an increase in parking infringements being issued,” Mr Doran said.

“I asked Cbus Super Stadium management to assist us in addressing the issue ahead of this match and was advised by Cbus Super Stadium management they ‘appreciated’ points raised however would not adjust their current Transport and Traffic Management Plan.

“It was disheartening to receive this response from Cbus Super Stadium management. It is the

duty of any good corporate citizen to be responsive to community concerns.

“I will continue to request Cbus Super Stadium improve event day traffic and parking outcomes and keep fighting for local residents and fans, so their experience isn’t tarnished by an unnecessary parking infringement when they return to their cars.”

Fans are being encouraged to use public transport including, parking at Varsity Lakes Train Station to catch the train or utilise the park and ride shuttle at Mudgeeraba, Burleigh, or Broadbeach to attend events. That is all of which is free with game day tickets.

The Stadium in March this year said new traffic management measures would be put in place to end severe disruption endured by residents living nearby during major events.

Residents living in Woody Views Way were afraid to leave their homes during events after threats from motorists.

A Cbus Super Stadium spokesperson, on the Titans-Broncos clash, has encouraged fans to use public transport, which was free and runs directly to the venue this weekend.

“Ensuring smooth traffic flow in the stadium precinct and surrounds is a priority for Cbus Super Stadium,” the spokesperson said.

“Fans will see an increased policing presence at this weekend’s sell out event, with QPS also conducting mobile patrols of the precinct at the request of the venue.

“Although City of Gold Coast is responsible for issuing infringement notices and management of fixed precinct signage, the stadium reviews the Traffic Management Plan annually with all local stakeholders to seek continuous improvement.”
