MAYOR Tom Tate has had an unexpected boost in his mayoral campaign – a winning position on the ballot paper.

At the ballot draw this morning, Councillor Tate in the Melbourne Cup field of eight candidates for the March 28 poll, was positioned last.

Robina dry cleaner and businesswoman Virgina Freebody had the top spot.

Poll analysts say candidates can gain some benefit by being placed either first or last on the ballot paper, with voters quick to cast their vote ticking either the top or bottom of the card.

The position of all 57 candidates on the ballot papers began being determined after 10am at the Electoral Commission of Queensland offices in Township Drive at West Burleigh.

Planning committee chair Cameron Caldwell has gained an advantage in his contest with colleague Kristyn Boulton in the new Division Four, gaining first on the ballot.
