THE winner of the Gold Coast’s new “super division” has been revealed, after the candidate triumphed with the smallest margin of votes in 25 years.
Darren Taylor will be the new councillor for Division 10, which takes in Surfers Paradise and Broadbeach.
He triumphed over former area councillor Eddy Sarroff by a margin of just 149 votes.
Mr Sarroff this morning phoned Mr Taylor and conceded defeat.
The former councillor, who served from 1995 to 2012 told The Bulletin he wished Mr Taylor well.
A delighted Mr Taylor will replace his father, retiring councillor Paul Taylor who represented the former Division 10 from 2012 until this year.
“It was a hard-fought battle and it has been a tense few weeks,” Mr Taylor said.
“It was always going to be tough but I am fortunate that I did get there in the end.
“I am looking forward to getting my hands dirty. There is a big job ahead of us.”
Division 10 was the last undecided election for the Coast following the March 28 election.
The new council is expected to be sworn in this month once the Electoral Commission of Queensland declares the outstanding seats.
