Gold Coast City Council Budget 2019-2020

TICKETS are fast running out for the biggest candidate forums of the Gold Coast’s 2020 council election campaign.

Just a handful of tickets remain on offer for the free events, which will begin next week and run through until March 24.

Over two weeks, the Gold Coast Bulletin will be touring the Gold Coast to give locals the opportunity to hear from candidates in their area to ensure they make an informed decision when Queensland heads to the polls.

Attendance is free, but registration is essential.

The divisional debates are being held because of the impact of boundary changes and retirements which will see at least four new faces in the councillor ranks after the March 28 poll.

We want to know what the candidates vying for those divisions stand for and how they measure up under scrutiny after questions from our readers and residents.

The first forum will be held at Kurrawa Surf Life Saving Club on Tuesday, March 10 from 6pm-8pm and will see candidates from Division 10 and Division 12.

This is expected to be one of the most fiery debates, with Division 10, which takes in Surfers Paradise and Broadbeach, having a record eight candidates, the most of any of the non-mayoral races.

Division 12, which takes in Burleigh Heads has just four candidates but many of the questions are expected to focus on divisive issues including the light rail extension and revamping business in the area.

The next debate will be held on Wednesday at Nerang RSL from 6pm to 8pm.

It will include candidates from Division 4, which includes Labrador, Runaway Bay and Paradise Point and Division 7 which takes in Arundel and Parkwood.

Division 5 councillor Peter Young, who was automatically re-elected this week will attend to reveal his plans for the next four years.

On March 16, candidates from Division 13 and 14, the two most southern seats representing Palm Beach to the border, will attend a forum at Burleigh Heads-Mowbray Park Surf Life Saving Club from 6pm to 8pm.

The city’s three most northern divisions, 1-3 will have their forum at Coomera Indoor Sports Centre on March 17 from 6pm - 8pm.

On March 18 the candidates of Divisions 6, 8, 9 and 11 will speak at Southport RSL from 6pm to 8pm.

This wide range of seats includes Southport, Carrara, Mudgeeraba and Robina.

The Gold Coast Bulletin and ABC Mayoral debate will be held at Home of the Arts on March 24 from 6pm.
