Gold Coast Council and State Government wash their hands of Burleigh Waters road danger

Demands are being made for the upgrade of an “absolutely diabolic” Gold Coast intersection used by families from four schools, with claims it is the scene of regular close calls.

THE Gold Coast City Council and State Government have been accused of washing their hands about fixing a dangerous intersection.

But a resident says he won’t go away until the problem is sorted.

Radio breakfast host Scott Mayman said he had been asking council for more than a year about an upgrade to the eastbound lanes of Christine Ave and Bermuda St intersection at Burleigh Waters.

“I’ve been given the run-around,” he said. “It’s like someone’s hoping I’ll just go away and this issue will go away, but it won’t.”

Mr Mayman said the intersection was dangerous for motorists and pedestrians.

“Families from four schools use it every morning and afternoon. There have been so many close calls there.”

Two years ago he called for an upgrade of the council-controlled stretch of Christine Ave. He said in November 2018 that council agreed work would be done on an extension of a second lane on Christine Ave – where two lanes merge into one.

However, he said nothing had happened and his attempts to get information from Division 11 councillor Hermann Vorster and Division 12 councillor Pauline Young had been referred to council’s media office.

“Even they have been unable to get information from council staff. So far, chirping crickets have been more vocal than council.”

In a brief statement, a council spokesperson said that as per a council resolution in late 2018, minor upgrades had been carried out at Christine Ave and Whistler Ave in February 2019.

“Planning and design work is underway for future improvements in that area.”

Council sources claim the Christine Ave and Bermuda St intersection is controlled by the State Government, but Burleigh MP Michael Hart insists it is council’s responsibility.

“Council caused this problem but they have been dodging and weaving,” he said.

“The State Government is responsible for Bermuda Street and the council is responsible for Christine Avenue.”

To make matters more confusing, he said Cr Vorster was responsible for the western side of Bermuda St on Christine Ave and Cr Young was responsible for the eastern side.

Mr Hart said council had converted two lanes into one at Honeyeater Dve, forcing motorists to suddenly merge and traffic to bank up to Bermuda St.

Cr Vorster described the intersection as a “mess”, “absolutely diabolic” and a danger to children walking or riding to school.

He was adamant the intersection was the responsibility of the State Government and he called for it to take urgent action.

“We’ve done our job in Division 11 by completely reconstructing the Mattocks Rd intersection at Christine Ave, and brought enough pressure on the State Government to construct a new signalised pedestrian crossing on the north eastern slipway,” he said.
