COOMBABAH State High School is about to undergo a $15.5 million revamp, with about 42 local jobs created.
According to an Education Department spokesman, the investment will deliver a new two-storey learning building and refurbishment to the home economics building.
The new two-storey learning building will include nine general learning spaces, two collaborative spaces, a staff workroom, two head of department offices, student and staff amenities.
“The home economics building refurbishment will convert the existing dining room into a new state-of-the-art kitchen space, new dining room area, and a head of department office,” he said.
Currently in the consultation stage, construction is due to start early 2022 and be completed later that year.
It’s understood the new building may be hired out to the community but it’s “not a priority”.
According to the planning documents, Coombabah State High School currently has 1331 students, but the Queensland Government Statisticians Office has forecast the school will grow to more than 1400 students by 2023.
Coombabah is known for its High Performance Sports Academy, a program for students that aims to develop their ability to balance the demands of school and elite sport training to achieve success in the sporting arena and in academia.
Run in partnership with the Runaway Bay Sport and Leadership Excellence Centre, and operating from the Gold Coast Performance Centre, students are offered a specialised program to improve academic and sporting endeavours.
They have access to world-class facilities for training as well as the opportunity to learn from elite athletes, their coaches and support staff.
