Construction has commenced for a new $120 million on-campus student accommodation tower at a major Gold Coast university.
On Tuesday, Griffith University vice chancellor Professor Carolyn Evans and Campus Living Villages chair Joe Dicks took part in the official sod-turning ceremony at the Gold Coast site.
The development will deliver 459 new beds for Griffith University students and is expected to increase on-campus living capacity to approximately 1000 students.
Mr Dicks said the project has been three years in the making and had overcome numerous hurdles.
“A lot of work has gone into this,” Mr Dicks said on Tuesday.
“We hit a lot of hurdles. We had to endure the Covid period and then we had the uncertainty on where the government was going with international students. But we persisted.”
Mr Dicks said the new tower will be developed to have a five-star ‘Green Star’ rating and will also provide an affordable alternative to the rental market.
Ms Evans said the ten-storey building would offer a “first-class” on-campus living experience to both domestic and international students.
“Students will be able to walk the bridge to a great university campus, jump on the light rail and head down to one of the greatest beaches in the world and return to a safe, friendly and welcoming environment,” she said.
Construction is due to be completed by mid-2026.
