Coast road intersection hit list: City and State roads which need immediate fixing

Gold Coast councillors are demanding several gridlocked roads across the region need to be urgently fixed as they fear motorists will lose their lives. Read which ones

The Gold Coast’s worst intersections are in the north of the city where councillors demand urgent fixing because they fear motorists will lose their lives.

A Road Network Development investigation by council lists the following traffic congestion hot spots across the city:

* Yatala/ Stapylton in the far north.

* Coomera/Pimpama in the north.

* Robina in The Central Coast.

At least 17 roads in the north have been nominated for priority construction work in 2025-26.

These include notorious gridlocked roads like Yawalpah Road, Foxwell Road, and Eggersdorf Road.

Other congestion challenges are being triggered by State roads – the Pacific Motorway continues to create congestion with concerns about exits 45 and 49 along with Coomera-Upper Coomera overpass.

Further south at Robina, investigations have found the worst spots include Exit 82, the M1 overpass linking Robina and Mudgeeraba and Robina Parkway-Laver Drive which is at gridlock for lengthy periods during peak hour.

The Coomera Connector and its links are also listed as priorities for upgrades, with Helensvale Road at four lanes already busy the major concern.

Only six roads are nominated in the south and west as development priorities.

City planning chair Mark Hammel, the Division 1 councillor, said residents would be aware that the City was experiencing major congestion and safety issues on roads in the north.

“It (the investigation) also calls out Robina and the Yatala industrial region as well. The report goes into a lot of detail and a long list of projects that need to be delivered by 2030, that hopefully address the capacity and safety,” he said.

He said many older intersections were built without the expectation of the increased amount of traffic and number of heavy vehicles using those roads.

“And their crash history is terrible. Hopefully we can get upgrades done before someone loses their life,” he said.

Officers said the traffic congestion in the Coomera area was “primarily caused” by high demand for motorists accessing the M1 through the Exit 54 interchange.

Stage one of the Coomera Connector would take pressure off the Exit but a suite of “interchanges, overpasses and links roads” were needed to manage traffic congestion.
