A SURFERS Paradise woman says she feels too anxious to go essential shopping after being berated by a stranger for not wearing a mask during lockdown.

Taylor-Dane Cadell said she was left “embarrassed” after a woman in her hotel complex scolded her for going out in public without a mask.

When Ms Cadell told the woman she was medically exempt from wearing one, the stranger responded: “You should be staying home then, everyone else is staying home”.

The 27-year-old said she had stayed home as much as possible, but needed to shop for groceries because stores don’t deliver to her building.

“All my emotions about it have been building up over a period of time,” Ms Cadell told The Bulletin.

“It is really embarrassing having to deal with the looks and stares I get.

“Even when people ask me to put my mask on when I’m going into a store or an Uber, I have to tell them I can’t.

“I feel anxious to go out.”

Queensland Health advised masks do not need to be worn in some circumstances, including those who have a certain medical condition.

Ms Cadell urged people to be kind to each other during the lockdown.

“If you see someone not wearing a mask, there’s a good chance they’re not wearing it because they can’t,” she said.

“They already feel self-conscious about the fact everyone stares at them for not wearing one.”
