Surf Life Saving Queensland plans expansion of Carrara Helicopter base on Gold Coast

Plans for a giant helicopter base with multiple hangers on the Gold Coast have been revealed. SEE THE PLANS

Surf Life Saving Queensland will double the size of its Gold Coast chopper base as part of a major expansion of its services in the city.

SLSQ has lodged plans with the Gold Coast City Council to expand its helicopter complex on Carrara’s Nerang Broadbeach Road. The current facilities have been operating at the site for more than 40 years and SLSQ say the time is right to increase its capabilities.

According to the plans, a new helicopter storage shed will be built to allow for two choppers to be parked, while a maintenance shed will also be built. A new office building will also be built for “ongoing joint operations for SLSQ and (the Queensland Police Service).

Its features will include an armoury, offices, pilot’s room and rest area, kitchen and police dayroom.

“The site has historically been utilised as a strategic emergency operations aviation base and hangar for SLSQ operations and provides a key support function to the community,” a planning report lodged with council reads.

“Operations include search and rescue, coastal surveillance and disaster response. The site layout and functionality will generally remain unchanged from the existing scenario.

“(It will have) a significant ‘face lift’ to significantly improve the aesthetic of the facility when viewed from the street.”

The proposal will go before council later this year.
