A popular fishermen’s market at The Spit will be turned into a restaurant and the rundown waterfront precinct upgraded, new designs reveal.
The Queensland Government on Monday will release tenders for expressions of interest at Carter’s Basin – the site covers 7000 sqm of leasable land and a 20,000 sqm seabed lease.
Almost 700 people within 24 hours had signed another petition, sponsored by Surfers Paradise MP John-Paul Langbroek.
State Development Minister Grace Grace says the site will continue to be home to the local fishing fleet which will gain “renewed and reconfigured facilities”.
She said the Miles Government has also secured the future of the neighbouring Peter’s Fish Market, with plans for bigger and better premises
“The Spit is one of the Gold Coast’s most iconic attractions and we know there’s even more
potential to unlock its immense opportunities,” Ms Grace said.
“We’re now seizing this opportunity and want to partner with industry to support marine tourism ventures on the Gold Coast.
“This is an opportunity for a world-class commercial marina with more berths, along with a seafood and marine tourism hub.
“I’m also very pleased that under our plan, Carter’s Basin will continue to be the home to the local fishing fleet.
“The land neighbouring the site will also be home to an even bigger and better Peter’s Fish
Market, which has been trading at the Spit for more than 30 years.”
Ms Grace promised State Development would conduct a “thorough and rigorous tender process” and “we’ll work closely with Council” to get the best outcome.
“We look forward to partnering with commercial operators who share the Miles Government’s
vision to drive more economic development, jobs and tourism opportunities on the Gold Coast,” she said.
Main Beach Association leader Sue Donovan, who daily has been collecting signatures, said both Premier Steven Miles and Ms Grace were aware of the support.
“Although the freshness of the seafood and the extremely reasonable prices are a huge drawcard, the main reason that people come down to The Spit so early in the morning is that they love the authentic experience of buying directly from the trawlers,” she said.
“They are horrified at the idea that the trawlers are under threat due to the sale of the lease to the site by the government’.
Mayor Tom Tate welcomed the move by Peter’s Fish Market to expand their operations.
“It is also pleasing to see progress by the state towards the redevelopment of Carter’s Basin
precinct and that local fishing operators will continue to operate at this location,” he said.
“Council looks forward to working with the community and the state government on continued implementation of the Spit Master Plan.”
