A Gold Coast city leader says owners of a derelict golf course could face further action if they do not respond to a show cause notice for “unlawful land use”.

Area councillor Ryan Bayldon-Lumsden said Gold Coast City Council had received a “number of complaints” about activities in the sheds at the former Arundel Hills Country Club site.

“(The complaints were) about use of the maintenance shed, late night activity, early morning loading and noise,” he said.

The councillor said a builder had been using the space.

“Council officers undertook their investigations and identified non-compliant activity and unlawful land use.”

Cr Bayldon-Lumsden said he understood the show cause notice was issued to the current landowners, Zhongsheng Group.

The Bulletin made attempts to reach the group for comment, but did not receive a response by deadline.

“(They have) 25 business days to respond to the show cause notice before council would look to progress to an enforcement notice,” Cr Bayldon-Lumsden said.

It comes after the new lessee of the site unveiled plans last week to transform it into a wellness and lifestyle retreat.

Real Commercial Qld director Joseph Codianni said the tenant had signed a lease from December 2022 until March 16, 2023 with the current site owner, Zhongsheng Group.

Prospective developers Dale Carroll, Steven Kleytman and Andrew Barbayannis are in the process of buying the 67ha site at Arundel Place, with settlement expected to be complete later this month.

Arundel Golf Club Community Reference Group spokesman Jason Young said the group was more concerned about the “long-term development” of the golf course.

“The residents want to keep as much green space as possible at the site,” he said.
