Squatters are believed to have sparked a building fire in the Southport CBD on Saturday night.

Emergency services were called to Welch St about 7.20pm following reports of smoke coming from an abandoned building.

A Queensland Fire and Emergency Services spokeswoman said one crew attended and quickly extinguished the fire.

She said there were reports of squatters using the building and this was believed to be the source of the fire.

Paramedics attended, but no one was inside the building at the time.

Police said they were called to the scene, but no damage was reported.
