Is this the fastest bin on wheels?
The sight of an elderly driver towing a wheelie bin managed to worry even the most seasoned drivers of the M1 through the Gold Coast on Wednesday morning.
The driver, whose number plate was obscured by the wobbling plastic garbage receptacle, was captured on video headed north between exits 75 and 77 at Worongary just after 10am.
The tiny plastic wheels can be seen skidding along the asphalt and spinning rapidly on their spindly bin axle.
One witness said the vehicle, a silver station wagon, was travelling at the same speed as other traffic in the 110km/h zone.
“I couldn’t believe what I was seeing,” the witness said.
“(The driver) was an elderly man, around 85 years old.
“The wheels were sliding around and I thought I probably shouldn’t be near him because the bin could fall off.”
The M1 has long been a place where people push their luck while waiting in the traffic, with drivers busted eating cereal, flossing their teeth and even playing a trumpet.
“I saw a woman peeling an apple with a knife, most mornings I see women doing their lips, hair, brows and applying moisturiser to their faces … and I saw a dude cutting steak on a plate,” one commuter told the Bulletin in 2015.
According to Guinness World Records, the world’s fastest motorised wheelie bin was ridden by Andy Jennings in the UK, who sent it at 72.568km/h in 2021.
That bin was fitted with special racing wheels and a 110cc engine.
