A cluster of mainstay businesses in Nobby Beach’s heart will shut in coming days to make way for a new development, which a critic says will “take away the Nobbys charm”.

They are among seven stores closing to make way for a new high-end, three-storey shopping centre on the corner of the Gold Coast Highway and Lavarack Road called Oxley House.

About a Girl Boutique, The Farm and Likliklik Gelato leases ended at the end of March.

The future of The Shack Superfood Cafe remains uncertain.

Local developer Daniel Veitch will transform the 2406sq m site into a high-end shopping centre precinct.

In 2022, Mr Veitch said the existing shopping strip would be integrated into the new complex, which he said was the key to revitalising the suburb.

Canvas Espresso owners said they received “some unexpected news” last week, confirming they would have to close before the end of April, to make way for new development.

Canvas owner Sarah Bradley said: “We had thought we had until the end of May, but sadly that is not going to be the case.

“We have managed to eek out every last possible day of trade.”

Ms Bradley said they were sad to say goodbye to Canvas Nobbys after over a decade of trading.

“It is sad to see these old buildings go,” she said.

“Although change is difficult, we feel condifent the new development will be great for the community and bring lots of new and exciting retailers and energy.”

She and her partner Luke took over the store five years ago when they had a one-week-old baby and two other children.

“We poured our heart and soul, and all our savings into creating a space that our community could love and enjoy,” Ms Bradley said.

“There has been great times, tough times, laughter, tears, mistakes made, huge achievements, milestones and lifelong friends and memories made.”

On their announcement post a commenter said the development would “take away the Nobbys charm”.

Ms Bradley replied: “It’s the end of an era, that’s for sure”.

52 Espresso owners said they would be closing on Sunday after four years of trading in Nobby Beach.

“We want to thank you all for you for your continued support over the last four years that I have had the cafe.”

Nobby Beach Gourmet Meats management said they would be closing on Sunday, but had an agreement with the developer they would be able to open in the new precinct.

Gourmet Meats worker Richard Davey said they were told it was expected to take up to 12 months for the construction to be finished.
